Short for High Yield Investment Plan. Originally, this term was used for legitimate, high paying (and high risk) investments. Now, the bulk of the HYIPS on the web are just Ponzi schemes.

Warning signs that an investment is likely to be a scam like this include guaranteed yield, very high interest (often paid daily or weekly), only accepts some sort of e-currency, and big incentives to bring in more members.
