Clone Attack on Client Funds​

FPA member Beneissa's money should have been safe. An unsolicited call from CityEQ.com came in. The company claimed to be a forex broker and gave a link showing a valid UK FCA registration for City Equities Limited.

Beneissa sent in a significant amount of money. Then all contact was cut off. By the time Beneissa's complaint came to the FPA, CityEQ.com was ready to close up and disappear with the money. The website went offline and all emails sent to them bounced.


There were 2 warning signs Beneissa missed...

First, the company offered to manage funds with a targeted rate of return of 25% per month. Return rates that high are unrealistic. Any company making a claim like this needs to be very carefully checked before sending any money.

Second, at the end of August, the FCA issued a clone firm warning. CityEQ.com was City Equities Ltd, and did not hold the registration belonging to City Equities Limited. Clone firms use similar names to try to claim to hold licenses and registrations belonging to real companies.

According to the FCA, CityEQ.com was nothing more than a boiler room. They'd make calls to prospects, show them a nice website, and point them to an FCA registration page belonging to a different company. This is often enough to trick an unwary investor into thinking the company is legitimate.


The FPA considers CityEQ.com to be a scam. If you placed money with them, gather up all of your evidence. Any information on the bank accounts you sent the money to would be helpful. Contact Action Fraud and the UK FCA and give them all the evidence.


Always take time to carefully check any broker or account management company before investing. If you don't, you may never see your money again.

The ONLY way to stop them is for all the victims to file complaints full of evidence. Otherwise, they can just keep doing this over and over again.
