Hey Folks:

The market is less focused on the tensions in the Middle East as police in Saudi Arabia were able to prevent protest and Libya’s civil war did not escalate further. However, now we have a different situation that may lead to a risk aversion scenario in the short term with early Friday morning's 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan, creating a sharp drop-offs in European and Japanese markets and the appreciation of the safe-haven Yen.

Bank of Japan immediately attempted to take control of the situation by pledging that they have liquidity for this emergency situation and will do everything in its power to contain the aftermath of this disaster. It is difficult to determine the severity of the tsunami, but much damage has been already reported across Japan, with more details surely to be released soon. On Sunday/Monday night, Bank of Japan is expected to have a press conference to specifically to speak about their fiscal plan and financial efforts for this disaster.

We have only a few tradable releases, so I would expect a pretty much sentiment driven market as results of the earthquake and tsunami...

UPDATE: BOJ intervened on Sunday night by injecting 15T YEN ($186 Billion) to stabilize the economy, which means we should see JPY weaken in the short/medium term.

Thanks Henry !

Folks,

Daylight savings have been applied in the U.S., two weeks ahead of the a lot of others (e.g. UK is now only 4 hours ahead of New York, where as normally it's 5 hours). All the more reason to use a Google calendar to show you what time the releases are at!

So as per previous weeks, here's the info:

I've put together a Google Calendar of Henry's tradable news releases which you can add to your iPhone or your own Google Calendar. This gives you the following:
  1. Translates the time into your local timezone
  2. Allows you to see your personal appointments alongside when the news releases are happening
  3. And if you have a Google Calendar account - notifications to your mobile phone via SMS (for free!)

Instructions (you only need to add this once and it will appear every week)

Adding to iPhone:
  1. Send an e-mail to your iPhone with the e-mail body of "webcal://www.google.com/calendar/ical/06nlopqpjr7nnehhgc99igak6k%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics" (without the quotes and remove the extra space before the '.com')
  2. On your iPhone, open the e-mail and click on the link.
  3. When prompted "Subscribe to the calendar: 'Henry Liu's Trading Signals'?", click "Subscribe".
  4. Open your calendar and it will say "The Calendar 'Henry Liu's Trading Signals' has been added"
  5. Click "Done".

Adding to your own Google Calendar and setting SMS notification (see accompanying screenshots attached):
  1. Log into your Google calendar and go to "Other Calendars"
  2. Type in "06nlopqpjr7nnehhgc99igak6k@group.calendar.google.com" (without the quotes and the .com should be one word - you'll need to remove the space)
  3. Now click on the drop-down for your newly added calendar "Henry Liu's Trading Signals". Click on "Calendar settings"
  4. Click on the tab "Notifications". Fill in the reminders you'd like - E-mail, SMS and Pop-up.

If you don't see "SMS" as a drop-down option, you need to configure the settings for your mobile phone in Google. Go to your "Settings" (top right) and choose "Mobile Setup" or check Google Calendar Help.

I update this based on news listed in the FPA calendar and then update every week shortly after Henry releases his weekly review, so you should only need to add the calendar once and from there on you'll get reminders every week to help you trade :)

Hope this helps,

Huwee.

Yen

Liu-

thanks! great help for forecasting...much sorrow from over losses though. Charts indicate a stablation of Yen/Usd as that is important now. I think they put up quite a few yen and hit the mark with very good accuracy this time.

The Yen

Hi Henry,

Thanks for all your help, one thing I don't quite understand is why the Yen will appreciate in value after the devastation of Japan. I realise that the BOJ has now injected fund and so the yen has fallen, but why did it appreciate initially, were people not afraid that the Japanese economy may falter due to the natural disater. When it happened in New Zealand their currency nose-dive, why does it work the other way round for Japan?

Thanks, Rachael A
