A smart card is simply a card that has a mcrochip built into it to carry information. These have many uses, including identity cards, security access cards, prepaid phone cards, prepaid subway/bus transit cards, and most newer credit and ATM cards. One advantage over older magnetic stripe technology is that many of these cards being able to “swipe” without making direct physical contact with a card reader. This can allow a payment to be made without even removing the card from a wallet or purse.
