What is adequate amount of time to test out a trading strategy?

As a general question, I want to know how much time I need to test out a trading strategy. Is one month good enough or I should test out my trades for entire year on demo account? I basically want to see how my trade set ups work in as many market conditions as possible. Anyone hear can give me feedback? Thanks
One month usually isn’t enough because it may only reflect one market condition. Aim for at least 3 6 months of testing or 100+ well-documented trades to properly evaluate your strategy. The goal isn’t just time it’s gathering enough consistent data across different market conditions to confirm you truly have an edge.

if you're talking about backtesting, dont confuse time with sample size.
For example if you can backtest 30 years of data in 5 minutes, do you really need to spend anymore time on backtesting? if you are talking about forward testing, then 6 months to a year is probably the average.
Exactly for a prop trading firm, backtesting large sample sizes quickly validates your strategy efficiently, while 6–12 months of forward testing builds real-time discipline. This ensures consistent, rule-based performance, which is what firms value most.

One month is usually too short to test a strategy across different market conditions. Aim for 3–6 months or 100+ quality trades on demo to see how your setups perform in trends, ranges, and high/low volatility. Full-year testing is even better, but the key is enough consistent data to prove your edge, not just spending time on demo.

Test your strategy long enough to see it survive different market conditions. For intraday trades, 3–6 months for swing trades, 6–12 months; and for long term trades, 1–2 years. Consistency beats quick results every time.

One month is usually not enough. You want to see how your setup behaves in different conditions, not just one market phase. For me, it’s less about time and more about number of trades. If you only take a few trades per month, you’ll need longer to see real patterns. Also, demo is useful, but small live size teaches you more about execution and psychology. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s consistency across both calm and volatile periods.

For testing a strategy, one month is usually too short, you won’t see enough different market conditions. A demo test of at least 6–12 months is better to cover trends, volatility, and news events.

One month usually isn’t enough. You might only see one type of market condition, and that can give you a false sense of confidence.

If you really want to test your setups properly, aim for several months, ideally close to a year, so you experience different trends, ranges, and volatility. Also focus on number of trades, not just time. The more data you have, the more reliable your results will be.

  • One month is usually too short in my opinion. Markets change a lot, so testing for a few months or even close to a year can give you a much clearer picture.

One month is usually too short. You’ll only catch one type of market and think it works everywhere.
Aim for at least 100 trades across different conditions, trends, ranges, high and low vol. That gives you a real feel if the edge holds up.
If you can backtest years of data fast, do that. Then forward test on demo for 1 to 3 months to make sure it feels the same live.
What’s the strategy doing? If it’s only catching one setup, you’ll know pretty quick.
