I would prefer EURUSD, since XAUUSD tends to have wider spreads and may require a larger margin.

The EUR/USD is more popularly traded market wide rather than the Gold, a precious metal. Naturally, the biggest reason that EUR/USD is more popularly traded is because both currencies are controlled by two of the largest economies in the world and studied intensely by the rest of the world because of it.

That being said, Gold is often viewed as a safe haven asset used to ride out market turbulence and retain its value. While currencies are valued on speculated fluctuations in the exchange rates of the currencies, gold is valued for its use in jewelry, and for its engineering and electrical properties.

Both are important components of the market, however whether one is more "better" than the other comes down to preference and strategy.
